Aquaponics is a food production system that couples aquaculture (raising aquatic animals ) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) whereby the nutrient-rich aquaculture water is fed to hydroponically-grown plants, where nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia into nitrates.
I had a small aquaponics set up in my kitchen for three years. I learned how to start and maintain it, and experimented with so many different plants. I took cuttings from my backyard plants and propagated myself more of them, and learned how to regrow some of our food from veggie scraps which I thought was so awesome!
I ended up removing the tank because I was nervous it would burst as all the weight was sitting on the glass. I have all the pieces I need to build a 100 gallon system I just need somewhere to put it that won't freeze. I also plan on building another smaller tank in my kitchen again with a much better design!
